Read and check JSON before using it

Use the JSON formatter to make compact JSON easier to read, check its syntax, or remove formatting whitespace. It changes formatting without rewriting number values, reordering object keys, or removing duplicate keys.

How to format JSON

  1. Paste JSON, import or drop a JSON file, or load the example to try the tool.
  2. Choose indentation and Beautify for readable output, or Minify to remove spacing. Output updates automatically as you edit. If validation fails, correct the highlighted syntax error.
  3. Copy the result or download it as a JSON file. Reset clears both editors.

Try a example with a large number

Load the example with Beautify selected. The items array is expanded onto separate lines, while largeInteger stays exactly 9007199254740993. Select Minify to return to one line without changing the data.

Make API responses and configuration files easier to read

Format JSON without changing the data

Beautify adds indentation so you can follow nested objects and arrays. Choose two or four spaces when reviewing an API response or configuration file. Minify removes unnecessary formatting whitespace when you need compact JSON.

Find syntax errors before the next step

Check the reported line and column, then inspect nearby quotation marks, commas and brackets. Syntax validation checks whether the document is valid JSON; it does not check an API contract or validate against a JSON Schema.

A compact ribbon of data tokens unfolds into an orderly branching hierarchy of indented rows.
