EX-CommandStation

open_source

Build your own DCC Command Station with Arduino. EX-CommandStation supports WiFi, Ethernet, Bluetooth, automation, turnouts, signals, and dozens of motor drivers for complete model railroad control.

About

EX-CommandStation is an open-source, do-it-yourself DCC Command Station produced by the DCC-EX team for model railroad enthusiasts. Designed to be affordable and accessible, it runs on popular Arduino microcontrollers (Mega, ESP32, STM Nucleo) and pairs with a wide selection of motor driver shields ranging from 1.5A up to 43A to power your track. The system supports multiple connection methods including direct USB, WiFi (via ESP8266 or built-in ESP32), Ethernet, and Bluetooth, making it compatible with virtually any DCC throttle app or hardware controller. A ready-to-run option (EX-CSB1) lowers the barrier for beginners, while the DIY path offers deep customization. Beyond locomotive control, EX-CommandStation manages turnouts/points (servo, solenoid, DCC), signals (light and semaphore), sensors (IR, Time-of-Flight), turntables via EX-Turntable, and I/O expansion via EX-IOExpander and I2C devices. Layout automation and animation sequences are also supported. Installation is handled by the cross-platform EX-Installer tool, with optional Arduino IDE configuration for advanced users. JMRI integration is supported for users who need a full-featured model railroad management interface. The project is entirely open-source, community-driven, and free to use.

Key Features

  • Multiple Connectivity Options: Supports USB, WiFi (ESP8266/ESP32), Ethernet, and Bluetooth connections, making it compatible with a wide range of DCC throttle apps and hardware controllers.
  • Wide Motor Driver Compatibility: Works with over a dozen motor drivers ranging from 1.5A (Arduino Motor Shield) to 43A (BTS7960 IBT_2), giving users flexibility for any layout size.
  • Full Accessory and I/O Control: Manages servo and solenoid turnouts, light and semaphore signals, IR and ToF sensors, turntables, I2C devices, and GPIO expanders for complete layout control.
  • Ready-to-Run and DIY Options: Available as the pre-assembled EX-CSB1 for beginners or as a fully customizable DIY build using common Arduino boards for advanced users.
  • Layout Automation and Animation: Built-in support for automating and animating layout elements including turntables, traversers, signals, and accessory sequences.

Use Cases

  • Controlling DCC-equipped model railroad locomotives and consists across an entire layout
  • Automating turnouts, signals, and accessory sequences for hands-free layout operation
  • Building a WiFi-enabled wireless DCC command station for a home model railroad using affordable Arduino hardware
  • Integrating with JMRI for advanced layout programming, operations, and dispatcher functions
  • Expanding layout I/O with servo modules, I2C displays, GPIO expanders, and turntable controllers via EX-IOExpander and EX-Turntable

Pros

  • Completely Free and Open Source: The entire platform — firmware, installer, and documentation — is free and open source, with no licensing fees or subscriptions required.
  • Highly Flexible Hardware Support: Runs on multiple Arduino-compatible microcontrollers and supports a vast range of motor drivers, WiFi shields, Ethernet boards, and I2C accessories.
  • Active Community and Thorough Documentation: Backed by an engaged hobbyist community with detailed documentation, troubleshooting guides, and step-by-step setup instructions for every configuration.
  • Easy Installation via EX-Installer: A cross-platform GUI installer simplifies firmware flashing and config management, making setup accessible even for users with limited technical experience.

Cons

  • Requires Hardware Assembly for DIY Builds: The DIY path involves sourcing and assembling multiple electronic components, which may be intimidating for users with no electronics background.
  • Narrowly Scoped Use Case: The platform is purpose-built for model railroad DCC control and has no applicability outside of that hobby domain.
  • Some Microcontrollers Deprecated or Not Recommended: Several commonly available boards (Arduino Uno, Nano, Mega+WiFi combo) are not recommended or deprecated, which may confuse new users purchasing hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is EX-CommandStation?

EX-CommandStation is a free, open-source DCC (Digital Command Control) Command Station for model railroads. It runs on Arduino-compatible microcontrollers and lets you control locomotives, turnouts, signals, sensors, and other layout accessories.

Do I need to build it myself or can I buy one pre-assembled?

Both options are available. The EX-CSB1 is a ready-to-run unit you can purchase, while the DIY path lets you source your own Arduino board and motor driver shield for a fully customizable build.

What microcontrollers are recommended?

The Arduino Mega, ESP32, and STMicroelectronics Nucleo boards are the currently recommended options. The Arduino Uno and Nano are not recommended due to limited resources.

How do I connect a throttle or controller?

EX-CommandStation supports USB, WiFi, Ethernet, and Bluetooth connections. You can use smartphone throttle apps, dedicated hardware controllers, JMRI, or the included EX-WebThrottle browser-based interface.

Is EX-CommandStation compatible with JMRI?

Yes, JMRI connection is a supported option, allowing users to leverage JMRI's full suite of model railroad management tools alongside EX-CommandStation's hardware control capabilities.
